 Functional training

Taijiquan for strength and mobility

Functional biomechanics

How we move and use our body determines how healthy and efficient it remains. A lack of movement leads to stiffness, incorrect movement leads to permanent wear and tear.

Healthy, biomechanically logical movement maintains and strengthens the function of our joints, muscles, tendons and connective tissue. With the right training, we can build undreamt-of strength and mobility and maintain them in the long term.

Chen-style Taijiquan can be the basis or part of our personal movement practice. We continually work on our physical and mental posture, the mechanics of our movement and the performance of our body.

We combine physical and mental training elements from different categories. Training for strength and flexibility meets relaxation through body work, and is complemented by mindfulness and introspection.

This is how martial art training becomes internal - what the Chinese refer to as Neijia.

Building blocks of Taijiquan

Functional body work and mindfulness

01

Posture

The foundation for healthy biomechanics is an anatomically coherent posture. We access and activate individual body parts with clear posture requirements. In the end we bring everything together and create a frame (jiazi in Chinese) for our physicality.

03

Body mechanics

In our movement we maintain the created frame - and pay attention to the connecting and linking of our body parts. Concrete principles create kinetically meaningful body mechanics (shenfa in Chinese), which we use to create stability and develop strength.

02

Body tension

Posture is only part of the newly created frame - it is filled by correct body tension. We relax our shoulders and hips, we bend our joints slightly, the upper body folds, the back becomes wide. This is how we recalibrate our bodies.

04

Inner work

With movement, internal mechanisms come into focus. We accompany the opening and closing of the upper body with our breathing. We guide our intention with our gaze. Concrete force paths arise from the more general connections we created.

Healthy use of strength

Strength is an expression of our entire training, and not just the result of individual muscle groups. Strength training with resistance is an important component, but only one of many. Truly functional training also includes the use of mechanical energy. We therefore deal intensively with aspects such as balance and stability, angles and directions of movement, but also our body structure and statics.

Stability and mobility

Stability and mobility are not opposites, but are dependent on each other. Joints can only fulfill their function if they can both stabilize and mobilize. Accordingly, strength is not the opposite of flexibility, but rather a necessary pairing of qualities.

Training fascia

Strength protects our body from injury - but only if we build it holistically. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When we train muscles, we also have to think about tendons, ligaments and connective tissue.

Training long-term

Strength protects our body from injury - but only if we build it holistically and over the long term. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When we train muscles, we also have to think about tendons, ligaments and connective tissue. These finer parts of our body take longer to gain strength.
